4 Steps For Arizona Pool Care During Monsoon Season

Summer is the prime time for Arizona residents to enjoy their pools—but it’s also the season for monsoons. Arizona monsoons typically start in June and can last through September. Unfortunately, these high winds and heavy rains can wreak havoc on your backyard oasis. Thankfully, there are a few tips and tricks you can follow to make sure your swimming pool stays free of dirt, debris, and damage.

Protect Your Pool From Monsoon Season

Prepping your pool for monsoon season should be the first check off your maintenance list. You should double-check your filtration system, hyper-chlorinate, balance your water’s chemistry, and trim your trees before and after the first storm. Let’s review these essential steps outlined by the pool experts at Emerald Pools & Spas.

1. Filtrate

Monsoons notoriously hit during the early hours of the evening. To prep, your pool for those powerful surges of wind, dust, and rain, reset your filtration system to clean debris during the hours of the storm. Yes, the storm will continue to blow debris into your pool as the filtration system operates, but filtering your pool during monsoon will decrease the amount of accumulated gunk.

2. Chlorinate

Nobody likes a green pool. Not only is algae dangerous, but it’s also an eyesore. Algae grow on phosphates, which are organic materials like dead leaves that are generally found floating around and at the bottom of pools.

Since high winds can really shake up your foliage, your pool will be even more susceptible to algae growth after a strong storm. You should hyper-chlorinate your swimming pool before and after a storm to ensure correct water chemistry and avoid algae growth—which brings us to our next section.

3. Balance Water Chemistry

Balancing your water’s chemistry is crucial regardless of the monsoon season. Filtrating and chlorinating your pool aren’t enough to sufficiently balance water. Instead, you or your pool service team should strive for the following numbers:

  • Carbonated Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm
  • pH Balance: 7.4-7.6
  • Calcium Hardness: 180-220 ppm

Introducing an algaecide that isn’t copper-based after a storm can also be beneficial as an aid in preventing algae accumulation from those pesky microorganisms.

4. Tidy Your Yard

Tackling the source of your debris head-on is always a good idea. If you’re noticing overgrown trees, bushes, and plants around your swimming pool, then it’s time to trim them. Ideally, you should trim your trees and shrubbery before monsoon season hits. This will help protect your pool and your home from fallen branches that could cause thousands of dollars in damages.

Don’t forget to inspect mature trees. Large trees with shallow roots are vulnerable to high winds and are likely to blow over if not addressed right away.
